Just Add Water

Just Add Water

The accessory method, starring one white tank top and a pair of jeans.

Here's what I know after 40 years in fashion: nobody needs more clothes. What they need is to stop wearing the same three outfits on rotation and start treating accessories like the main event.

This season especially. The runways are screaming it - stacked, layered, sculptural, a little excessive in the best way. Bags doubled up. Brooches pinned where brooches don't usually go. Necklaces in threes. Scarvees doing things scarves weren't necessarily designed to do.

Which brings me to the method.

The Method

You already own it. White tank (or t-shirt, or shirt), jeans, done. That's the canvas. The accessories are the actual outfit.

A statement necklace turns a Tuesday tank into something that looks considered. I wore this one to nothing fancy. That's the point.

Same denim I've had for decades, a metallic bag with a story, shoes that aren't trying too hard. Head to toe, the accessories did the work.

Here's how it breaks down.

Bags

One bag is fine. Two is interesting. A raffia bag covered in chartreuse pailletes is a whole conversation. Carry the one that sparks conversation, compliments or both!

Scarves

Tied at the neck is expected. Tied at the hip is everywhere. Tied at the wrist is the move. A silk square doing double duty as a bracelet - that's the kind of styling decision that separated the dressed from the styled.

Brooches

Yes, brooches. No, not on a cardigan. Pin one to a tank top strap. Pin six to the front of your jeans or on a a back pocket. Treat them like punctuation - a comma here, an exclamation point there.

Earrings

Bigger than you think you can pull off. Sculptural, sunlit, the kind of earrings that frames your face whether or not you brushed your hair. Spoiler: you can pull it off.

Bracelets

A single great bangle, worn like you've owned it forever. Or stack twelve. Both work. The trick is intention - not "I grabbed whatever was in the bowl."

Necklaces

Chunky silver chains over a ribbed tank, with jeans and a knit draped on your shoulder. The outfit underneath is nothing. The necklaces are everything. And, can you imagine a great kitschy bag for a long day on or near the water?

The Takeaway

Your white tank and jeans are the canvas. The accessories are the outfit — they finish it, elevate it, and show your personality. Don't skip them. And if you've been skipping them when you shop? Now's the time to start your collection.

Just add water.

Pro tip: change the color to black for fall/winter and the method still works.
