Rwanda Ruined Me (In the Best Way)
I've always wanted to go to Africa.
In late 2019, I hit Tanzania, Kenya & Zanzibar — safari and beach escape, box checked. Except I didn't want to check it off. I wanted more. It felt like the opening chapter. Ever since, all I've wanted is more.
So this year: Rwanda, two girlfriends, and a plan built around gorillas, chimpanzees, and golden monkeys. We layered in cultural experiences too, because why go all that way for just the wildlife...tempting as that is!
I went for the trekking. I came home with something else entirely.
The real beauty of Rwanda isn't just the mountains, the forests, Lake Kivu, or the fabric in every direction (though — all yes). It's the people. The strength, the resilience, the pride in country, the love for their president — that's the actual foundation everything else sits on top of. You feel it before you can name it. And, you miss it when you leave. In a world where politicians have let people down it is incredible to see an entire nation love their president. It was just a bit over 30 years ago when Rwanda suffered a genocide so awful that I am amazed at the resilience in 3 decades. It covers your heart in a way that makes you want more from your leaders and more in your life. Love, laughter, nature and ..... well fashion.
I came home needing more color in my life. And an upgraded pattern-play game.
Here's the look I saw again and again, every single day: a shorter African-print wrap skirt, layered over a longer contrasting-pattern midi skirt, and then — the plot twist — a striped rugby top, tucked in. I saw it on women everywhere and I could not get enough. Here's proof — caught this combo on the street mid-trip. I wish I'd photographed more of it, but trust me on this one.
Here's my takeaway: that rugby top would be incredible with almost any print — African fabric, florals, brocade, doesn't matter.
The lesson: play with pattern, fabric, and yes — gender.
I know, I know, gender in clothing is outdated — but hear me out on why I'm choosing rugby over classic polo for women right now: rugby tops run a bit oversized, bolder in stripe and color combos, and just more fun to move in. If you want to ease in, start with one of the solids I picked with a contrast trim, and size up. Roomier is cooler. Always.
I built a shop board inspired by this trip — multiple categories, all ready for you to mix and experiment. The only rule: have fun.
